Canada Day Weekend at Silver Star Bike Park

We love #SilverStar because the sunshine that Vernon has to offer is incredible, the meticulous care and progression of the trails at the resort and  of course the short lift lines.  Silver Star continues to draw the mountain bike community from all over the world back year over year.

For our Canada Day Shred we stayed in the Fire Light Lodge.  The hotel offers modern kitchens in each condo with private hot tubs and a bbq on the patio, not to mention a really great location- just off the resort parking lot.  The condo building has a bike wash in the underground parking as well as a bike lock up.  Although we found though that sometimes, especially while we were there over the long weekend, the lockup got pretty full we always managed to make room for them.

Of course we spent our days shredding bike park laps, our favorites are:

  • Beginner riders:  Challenger & Jedi Mind Trick
  • Intermediate riders:  Super Star & Rock Star
  • Advance riders:  World Cup & Walk the Line

Whats great about the new trail map design that the resorts are starting to come out with is the trail progression- shown on the right hand side of the Silver Star Map.  The top half shows the flow trails, the hardest flows are on the top and as you work your way to the green its gets easier.  The same is true for the technical trails, blacks being the hardest and blues being the easiest.  This design makes it great to gradually progress your skills and know what to expect.

When it was time for lunch (or apres), our go-to spot was the Red Antler, the staff were always friendly and lucky for us they always seemed to have a jug of beer on sale.

We wandered down the mountain towards Vernon to check out Kalamalka Lake (about a 25 minute drive from the resort) for a short little hike that could easily be done in your FiveTens to a rocky area where we decided to kick back and relax to hide away from some of the crowds and watch some daredevils cliff jump into the crystal blue water.

We carried on shredding the weekend away when I blew a spoke on my Gambler and had to visit the on mountain bike shop.  The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful getting my bike back together.  They even took the time to show me how to fix it if it did happen again.  They gave by bike a safety check and I was out the door in no time (and with what I felt was a very reasonable bill) to carry on riding.

When it was time to go home, you never feel like you quite ready to head back to reality… but the endless fresh fruit stands on the side of the road on the way home help distract you just a little bit.  Until next time Silver Star.
